Imagine having a birthday party with 10 to 20 excited youths and you and maybe one other adult are responsible for all of those youths. Now take the youths and place them on a field or in a gym and imagine what it would be like to manage these same youths on a weekly basis for 8 to 10 weeks. Now remember that the first couple of sessions these youths may not know you very well so they are very attentive. After a few sessions they are becoming more comfortable and tend to get more out of control and it is your responsibility to maintain the control while providing a positive environment for all of these kids to grow. At the end of the season you have watched these kids develop their skills and show more respect for themselves, teammates, coaches and referees. Congratulations to you and your team.
This is a tough scenario but you can do this. Coaching is an important task because those of us that do coach need to teach our students what it means to be a TEAM member and that the person scoring is not the only person on the team. It is also important to instill the importance of respect. respect for the game, it's rules, it's players, it's coaches, it's referees and it's parents. Kids that learn this valuable lesson also develop a stronger respect for themselves.
I used the word TEACH above because coaches are teachers.
